Why it matters
High blood pressure is the leading cause of stroke and a major cause of heart and kidney disease in Belize. It usually causes no symptoms at all, which is why regular checks matter.
Lowering your blood pressure
Small, steady changes work better than sudden ones.
- Cut back on salt, salted meats, stock cubes and packaged snacks
- Move your body most days — walking counts
- Reduce alcohol and stop smoking
- Take blood pressure medicine every day, even when you feel fine
Checking at home
If you have a home monitor, sit quietly for five minutes first, rest your arm on a table at heart height, and record both numbers. Bring your readings to your next appointment.
