What diabetes is

Diabetes means there is too much sugar in your blood. Over time, high blood sugar damages the eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart and feet.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form in Belize. It builds up slowly, and many people have it for years before they are diagnosed. It can be managed, and complications can be prevented.

Signs to watch for

Talk to a health worker if you notice any of these signs for more than two weeks.

  • Passing urine much more often, especially at night
  • Feeling very thirsty or very tired
  • Losing weight without trying
  • Cuts or sores on the feet that heal slowly
  • Blurred vision

Getting tested

A blood sugar test takes a few minutes. Ask for it at any public clinic, polyclinic or district hospital. There is no charge for the test.

If your result is high, the clinic will arrange a second test and start you on a care plan the same day where possible.

Living well with diabetes

Most people manage diabetes with food changes, movement, medicine and regular check-ups.

  • Fill half your plate with vegetables and eat smaller portions of rice, flour and sugary drinks
  • Aim for 30 minutes of walking a day, five days a week
  • Take your medicine exactly as prescribed, even when you feel well
  • Check your feet every day and report any sore that is not healing
  • Attend your three-monthly review and yearly eye check
