Infections

Dengue and mosquito-borne illness

How to protect your household from dengue, chikungunya and Zika, and when fever needs urgent care.

Peak season
June to November
Main carrier
Aedes aegypti mosquito
Breeding sites
Standing water around the home

Stop mosquitoes breeding

The mosquito that spreads dengue breeds in clean, still water close to houses. Removing water is the single most effective action a household can take.

  • Empty and scrub water drums, buckets, tyres and plant pots weekly
  • Cover water storage containers tightly
  • Clear blocked gutters and drains
  • Use screens, nets and repellent, especially at dawn and dusk

If you get a fever

Rest, drink plenty of fluids and use paracetamol for fever. Do not take aspirin or ibuprofen — they increase bleeding risk in dengue.

Vector control teams may visit your area for spraying and inspection. Please allow them access.
