The Ministry of Health & Wellness has published the Belize Health Sector Strategic Plan 2025–2034, setting the direction for the health system for the next decade.
The plan responds to the country's shifting epidemiological profile. Life expectancy at birth has risen from 68.9 years in 2000 to 73.7 years in 2024, and infant mortality has fallen from 21.2 to 15.87 deaths per 1,000 live births. At the same time, non-communicable diseases — diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and cancer — now account for the greatest share of premature death and disability.
Four priorities anchor the plan: strengthening primary health care as the first point of contact, expanding National Health Insurance coverage, building a resilient and well-trained health workforce, and digitising health information so decisions are made on current data.
The Ministry will report publicly against the plan's indicators each year.
